Gladiola farm along our winding route |
We arrived in Frankfurt, Germany last Friday and rented a car to drive down to Schwäbisch Hall. What would have been a 2-hour drive on the Autobahn turned into a lovely 5-hour drive on small roads through small, idyllic villages of Baden-Würtemburg.

When we finally rolled into Schwäbisch Hall, we must have looked completely lost and utterly inept, because a very nice guy sitting at the bus stop ran into the street, stopped us, and offered in very broken English and mostly German we couldn’t understand, to help us! You can imagine how well this went…the blind leading the blind. After a few minutes of miscommunication leading to a traffic jam behind us, he offered to walk in front of our car to our apartment. When we got to our street, no one knew where the hell the damn thing was! So…we parked the car and decided to venture on foot. We wandered up and down the street for about an hour, to no avail. Eventually a very nice woman heard our pleas to another unsuspecting citizen of Schwäbisch Hall and offered to walk us to our apartment. We then realized that we’d passed it several times unwittingly because it was completely unmarked!

Josenturm, and our yellow apartment building to the left (the open windows in the attic are ours!). |
After our ordeal, we enjoyed some great Schwäbisch Beer (Haller Löwenbräu) in the town square, and got settled.
